They found Bruce, the maniac shark of Steven Spielberg's classic smash hit flick "Jaws"! The terrorizing prop with incredibly sharp teeth was discovered buried in a LA junk yard.
With the 35th anniversary of the first film coming up fast, an NPR correspondent went out to find the mechanical killer. A source from Yahoo.com said that so as to have maximum control of their creation, the "Jaws" filmmakers developed 3 sharks for their 1975 film. The were all made from the very same mould, and the sharks were named "Bruce" after Spielberg's solicitor, Bruce Ramer. When the journalist and "Jaws"-enthusiast Cory Turner set out to hunt down Bruce's resting place, he went directly to the source -- the movie's director. A spokesperson for Steven Spielberg explained the original Bruce sharks had all been demolished, as nobody had thought of saving them. But ideas had been circulating on a Facebook page about the shark that there had been Bruce out there somewhere. After some digital digging, Turner revealed a fourth shark had also been cast from the original mildew, just months after its brothers were made. This variation of Bruce was essentially created for showing at the Universal Studios Theme Park, where it hung by its tail for roughly 15 years.
Turner started calling junk yards to work out if maybe the disappearing shark had been seen.He finally located the animal in a junkyard in the sunshine Valley area of Southern California, which was just one or two mins away from Universal.Turner also approached the team who built Bruce, including art dep. members Joe Alves and Roy Arbogast to confirm that this was indeed and authentic Bruce. "it is the real one," Arbogast told Turner after inspecting the creature. "it is simply kinda ' sweet to see it again after twenty-five or thirty years. It is amazing that it's still here." As the classic "Jaws" anniversary approaches, there's been buzz out of Hollywood that Universal is considering a 3D "Jaws" remake which will allegedly star actor / comic Tracy Morgan in the primary shark hunting role. Perhaps we'll see Bruce on the big-screen again, though he would be a bit to shy for his 3D closeup after all of these years off from his loving public. |
