Blake Edwards tones down the broadly ludicrous style that's his signature with this sneaky musical comedy starring Julie Andrews as UK entertainer Victoria Grant. She and an older mate, gay impresario Toddy ( Robert Preston ), are close to starvation in 1930s Paris. Introducing her to the cabaret world as a Polish female impersonator Victor / Victoria. Victoria, now a lady pretending to be a person in drag, becomes a massive greatness in the club world. Chicago gangster King Marchan ( James Gather ) becomes particularly drawn by Victor / Victoria while visiting Paris with his dim-witted girlfriend, Norma ( Lesley Anne Warren ), and his ever-faithful bodyguard, Mash ( Alex Karras ), who's more than a small concerned by his boss's interest in a transvestite. As Marchan attempts to get to the source of his attraction to the entertainer, making an attempt to expose the facts behind the rhinestone headdress, the farce commences, and the meaning of sex and sexual preference comes into question for all of the characters. A director who frequently shows an eagerness to let the seams in his work show for comic effect, Edwards has decided on classy smoothness here while opening himself to questions of sex that his earlier films had nervously mocked.
